I’m not too young…

Due to the fact that I am sick of all ‘teenage’ fashion magazines, I decided to buy Vogue. I’ve always felt weird buying ‘grown-up’ magazines because I think that someone will say “why are you buying that, you’re too young” or something similar.

So anyway, after purchasing old editions of Elle and Glamour during the summer (to cut up for my textiles) and not receiving any weird looks, I figured what the heck, no-one should judge me.

And you know, the world did not stop and stare, it was actually all okay.

The tights from my childhood

I really want some of those white wool/cotton tights. You know, the one’s that you have when you are a small child, that are actually opaque? Like these ones from woolworths, except they are only in kiddies sizes. In fact, I really want them in several colours. Don’t ask me why, I just think they are quite cool.

Does anyone know where to get them in normal sizes?

A medal made out of a biscuit and tinfoil

Yep, that is me. Winner in the Lazy Oaf photo competition. This is why I say enter competitions, you get the glory of winning!

I know I actually came runner up, but I still feel like I won!

A ponder for you all

I actually heard about this on the news today, but I have just found this daily mail article, which will probably explain it better.

The jist is that some of the fashion world is taking a stance on weight etc by banning models under (uk) size 8 from the catwalk. The news said that things like the clothes show and other big fashion events are doing this in order to get rid of this idea that skinny is better (I think it was something like that).

So anyway, this genuinely interested me and I have always said that people shouldn’t try to loose weight unless they really have to (like it’s dangerous for their health). Obviously, people should take some pride in the way they look and eat well, do exercise etc, but not starve themselves silly.

The amount of people my age who do admire skinny people and don’t eat etc to try and look like them, isn’t as big as people make out, but there is a good sized proportion (although it probably depends on where you are looking).

Although it is a good plan, I’m not entirely sure how it will change the way people think. I think part of how people view fat/thin is how they are brought up and what there friends are like. I know people who used to laugh at these so called ‘fat’ people (in my opinion not a lot of them were actually fat) and I never actually got this because they went around going ‘oh, i’m so fat, I need to loose weight’, completely contradictory in my opinion. Maybe it’s due to the way I’ve been brought up. I personally think that as long as people are comfortable with how they look, then what’s the problem? It’s true to say that thinner people tend to be able to get away with strange outfits etc, but is that more to do with the way everyone thinks?

Skinny jeans ‘were so yesterday’

I’ve never been a big fan of drainpipes simply because I do not think they suit me (they do however look nice on many other people, this I am jealous of).

But yesterday, I went to town (birmingham) for the first time in several weeks and my friend persuaded me to try on these jeans. (The photo isn’t the greatest, neither is it from a good angle, but it was the best I could do). They aren’t drainpipes, but they are “slim leg”, which is similar in my opinion. Strangely I quite like them. Whether they suit me is another question because I think I have strange shaped legs, but I did purchase them.

I know it’s a bit late to jump on this straight jean trend, but I have never been particually keen on trends, so hoo-har. (I also rather liked that tartan top, but I am a cheapskate, so probably won’t buy it until it is in the sale or something)

*Edit* Thinking about it, I highly doubt that the skinny jean trend is going to go away fast.

And who are you supposed to look like?

On reading “Originality in Inverted Commas” on Style Bubble, I couldn’t help but agree on what Susie says. The quest for originality in fashion that everyone seems to want, does indeed turn it into a trend in itself and in effect- it loses the idea of being original. But then, unless you buy/make one-of-a-kind garments or customise things beyond recognition, aren’t you going to be dressing like everyone else anyway?

It’s certainly true of me, I dislike looking like everyone else and owning the same clothes as other people, but on some parts, I think it’s more wanting to have my own voice, which I suppose does actually mean I am trying to be original. It’s not really something you can win.

In some ways, the only truly “original” people are those who know what suits them and will manipulate fashion trends into their style as opposed to following the herd. I would also say that the other sort of “original” dressers, are those who are willing to try something knew out without being afraid of getting strange looks- the ‘creators’ of trends as it were.

So I suppose, if you want to be truly original, just be yourself and dress however you feel comfortable. Follow trends, but don’t be a slave to trends. No-one can be more original than by being themselves.

Thrifty or a clone?

Whilst watching the end of Popworld on Saturday morning, there was one comment that stuck in my mind.

“Is that an expensive top or some kind of thrifty thing?”

I won’t deny that Alexa has good fashion sense, because she does. But when Robbie made that comment I just thought, “what?! So now it’s everyone who dresses similar to her is thrifty?”. Don’t get me wrong, I think thrifty-ness is great, I encourage it, but I just think that it’s a bit stereotypical that’s all.

The Charity Shop Boots

I’m back and ready to chop that brick

I have been in Devon with mon amie for the past week, so no posts! But I am back and ready to be in full swing (lucky you haha).

Whilst in Devon, there was a bit of charity shop browsing and I came across some lovely brown, slouch boots. Naturally, I forked out the £15 for them (I had spending money so all was good). I shall post a photo a bit later.

I LOVE charity shop shopping because you can get some good stuff, well, some needs a bit of modifying and tweaking, but you are certain that no one else would have it. We also went into this vintage shop which was lovely, although I was rather scared of the fur items because I think it was real and that is a bit urrgh really.
