The secret weapon

July 30 2007

From my non-posting this week, you can probably tell that I am either a) feeling uninspired or b) a bit busy. Actually, I’m feeling a bit of both, but we shalln’t dwell on that.

I find that with clothes, you have to feel inspired because otherwise it just doesn’t work. At least that’s the case with me. I think that is why I’ve been having so much trouble with buying items lately – I just have no clue what I want to wear, no direction, no ideas. I’m going to blame the fact that I’m a teenager and no matter how much everyone else seems to think they have “found themselves”, it’s just not the case at 16. Of course, this sort of enlightenment helps when it comes to style. Some may think fashion to be frivolous, but in my opinion, it has the power to express you in so many ways.

My enthusiasm has unfortunately been going a bit downhill of late, but I find that one of the few ways to keep it up is to look at how other people are wearing it. Street style blogs, such as The Sartorialist or The Style Scout (there are of course many many others as well), flickr group Waredrobe Remix (which I really ought to get round and contribute to) and even posts on other blogs demonstrating personal style, are all brilliant places to find things like this. I think that fashion is what normal people make of it.

And that is what I love so much about it – there may be trends which probably will have passed by the time you have one sock on, but the ability to put your own spin on things means that anything is possible.

Too true, but I think that it would take a lot of effort to pull off something leopard print at this present time, it was pretty much slaughtered last year by the ’scene’.

Ahhh! The Leopard Print. Never a big fan, but recently I bought a leopard print sarong which I am wearing as a scarf. With a black tee, tatty boy cut jeans, and cute flats, and a massive bag, I think I’m pulling it off pretty well. I wouldn’t try an actual item of clothing though.

In reference to the original blog post, right now I’m trying an accessories drive for my ‘direction’. Simple clothes with eye catching necklaces, bags, etc. I even tried going the ‘Nicky Hilton’ route for a while, (check out the pics on http://www.nicky-h.com and you’ll get what I mean) in an attempt to have some co-ordinated permanent style.

But to no availl. I will probably just end up going back to my ’something that vaguely looks good and is clean, 5 minutes before I need to leave the house’ look. Though I have to say, the days when you put no thought into your outfit, are the days you get the most complements. Perhaps ‘effortless chic’ is actually effortless, when I thought it was actually ’stylist chic’.

  3. Hmm, you make some good points there. I was never a fan of leopard print, though I don’t see why the odd touch should cause offence to most.

I think that the ‘effortless chic’ thing works mostly because you probably feel comfortable and those are the days when you actually don’t care too much, thus you radiate some kind of vibe (does anyone know what I’m rambling on about?). Maybe that’s what it is – the vibe you radiate from feeling that you look nice or you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.

At the moment, for me, its all about nautical.
I may do a post on it on here, if you do not mind?
